Background on the Disaster

On December 26, 2004, tragedy struck the southeast Asian countries that all share a coast with the Indian Ocean. The third largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph started undersea in the Indian Ocean, creating a series of large tsunamis that mainly affected Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Maldives. The deadly effects of the earthquake resulted in a death toll of 230,000 people in 14 countries and a worldwide donation of approximately $7 billion (2004 U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid to the affected countries.

The purpose of this site is to inform those who would like to learn many of the different aspects of the natural disaster. The 2004 tsunami has greatly impacted many from an economical standpoint to a psychological disorder. This site has a collaboration of the ecological, geological, psychological, political, and economic information pertaining to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and earthquake.
